  1. My problem with VW's is the ones made in Mexico. I had a Jetta that incessantly had electronics issues. I believe the only ones made in Mexico right now are the Jetta, Tiguan, and Taos. Avoid those like the plague.
  2. Krdshrk

    WTB Used Car

Thanks - I've owned a Jetta before and refuse to buy another VW due to the sheer amount of issues... Don't want anything made in Mexico, lol. I did pick up a new (to me) car last weekend. 2018 Subaru Forester
  3. AlDente67

    WTB Used Car

My kid still has her Jetta for sale: https://www.njgunforums.com/forum/index.php?/search/&q=jetta&search_and_or=or Need new brake pads and some paint scuffs repaired (which I was thinking of getting the shop to respray it). Gets great mileage although it isn't a hauler like a small SUV. Still fits a lot of stuff. Also has Weathertec mats back and front. She bought a newer Mazda 3 from Hertz in Hawaii, had it shipped by boat to LA and then took a roadtrip from there to here. I wouldn't have advised going that route, but it had no issues cross-country and looks brand new for a former rental. I'm afraid to ask what she paid, but she has no use for 2 cars and the Jetta just takes up space in my driveway. I think she was asking too much last year and probably would be much more reasonable now. For instance, she refused to include the mats until I explained that they are custom cut for a 2014 Jetta and would not fit any other vehicle quite the same (except another Jetta close to the model year)
  4. True for Porche, MB, BMW, Audi. Not as true for VW. btw, a cursory search shows that the 2014 Jetta has a better than average rating for maintenance. The average for annual maintenance cost is around $600.00.
  5. I still have my daughter's 2014 Jetta for sale. 74k miles 1.8l turbo. Gets 40 mpg hwy. No issues aside from needing a brake pad change. It is black though. She took a job in Hawaii and it wasn't worth the effort of shipping it all that way. The budget fits and you get the benefit of dealing with a fellow forum member. Ping me if you'd like to look at it. A previous buyer had a company come out and do a full inspection and road test and that is all they could find (the brakes). Located in East Windsor.
  6. Reviving the old thread. Are we talking about the WeatherTech Floor Liners? Those are awesome and they ride nice and high to catch all the water or snow. https://www.weathertech.com/floorliner-digitalfit/ I happen to have a used BLK set for a 2009 VW Jetta Sportswagen for sale. Front and Rears and the OEM mat for the hatch. All for $130.00 OBO. I sold the car but the mats are still in great condition. I will post on the for sale forum too...
  7. Lol. I’ve always had great luck with VW. I’ve had 2 Jetta’s, 2 GTI’s, and now a new Tiguan for Mrs Tex. Never had a lick of problems with any one them.
  8. My beater is an 02 Jetta TDI (diesel). 280,00 miles and runs great, I drive about 100 miles round trip everyday to work and average 50 mpg. Keeps the miles and wear off my 2014 Ram 2500 Laramie diesel
  9. Current- driving an '08 Suby Legacy, nothing fancy, it starts and it goes, rain or heavy snow makes no difference. Favorite - '01 BMW 325i, car was loads of fun and just great. Had it forever until it floated away in a flood (it was parked) and I purchased the Suby. Worse- Some 80's something VW Jetta, biggest piece of junk ever, everything broke on it, nothing but problems. I think I sold it for $100 to get it off the property.
  10. Currently - 2007 Chrysler Town & Country Minivan. Previous - 2011 Hyundai Sonata SE (Recently most likely totaled in an accident) 2006 Scion tC (My favorite) 1995 VW Jetta III (POS) 1991 Ford Taurus 1983 Jeep Cherokee Next up: Most likely a 2017 Honda Pilot EX-L
  11. For me I found one of the best things I can do when I'm driving in many different states is use my phone GPS function to figure out my miles per hour. I have found in some cars that the GPS shows me going 7 mph faster or slower than what my speedometer says. This has caused me to reevaluate a lot of what I think about while driving on the highway. If I rent a Chrysler 200, for example, I'm almost guaranteed that if I hit the cruise control at 70 mph the GPS shows it as 67 mph. Volkswagen Jetta's on the other hand, will show 72 while the GPS shows 70. Also, I've noticed a huge difference in how reactive the cruise control is in American cars versus foreign. Every Chrysler or Dodge that I have ever rented has a bump in the automatic transmission that slows the acceleration uphill that does not happen on any Japanese car. It has been quite an eye-opening experience being able to rent four cars in a month over two years.
  12. I've even have/had the V10 twin turbo Volkswagen Tuaregs. They are notoriously expensive to repair but I have my third and they've been bullet prof beasts. I don't recommend it for commuting because the fuel economy isn't good and due to their rarity have gotten expensive as hell to buy. However, I've had Jetta TDIs and they economy was so good it was crazy. The torque in the diesels make up for having small motors and they go like a bat out of hell. every manufacturer has their lemons but to classify VWs as money pits is plain wrong.
  13. Hogwash, with basic maintenance a VW is as reliable as anything else, plus it feels like a German car should ( even new jap cars feel like they are falling apart). My wife and I have owned 8-9 VWs in the last 30+ years and they've all been great. My last one, an '07 Jetta went 80k on nothing but oil changes (every 10k), air filters and a set of rear brake pads before I traded it in. My wife's current car is a 2010 CX-7, its a piece of crap and will be the last jap-crap we ever own. It looked pretty equal to a Tiguan when she bought it and it was a couple grand less, but the materials and build quality are a mess. For example, the inside door handles look just like the ones in the Jetta, except that the ones in the Jetta were brushed aluminum while the Mazda ones are all plastic. The Mazda turn signal and wiper stalks have felt like they'd come off in my hand since day one, a far cry from the controls in my VWs and Porsche. ^this! My current dub is a '14 Passat tdi. 27k so far with nothing but 2 oil changes and a few trips to the body shop (it was hit 4 times in less than a year, the '12 corolla that rear ended it was totaled, I got a new rear bumper cover). I wouldn't call it fast, but it has great (diesel) torque so it feels faster than it is and handles nicely for a front wheel drive. 40 mpg around town doesn't hurt and 50+ highway beats any hybrid without having to lug around 600 lbs of future hazardous waste like a hybrid.Edit: Is forgotten about a coworker who recently replaced an older Pattat tdi when the head gasket let go at barely over 380k miles. Does that qualify as a "money pit?"
  14. Toyota or Honda for reliability and something small with a small engine for efficiency. Or an older golf or Jetta TDi.
  15. Vlad G's description of HK reminded me of a VW Jetta I sat in years ago. "Ze engineerz have zurveyed ze population und have determined ze optimum ergonomics of ze mazter race. If u don't fit, it's your problem, not ourz."
  16. VW jetta TDI. I get 41-49 mpg
  17. 2012 VW jetta turbo diesel. I get 44-48 mpg.
  18. If it will make you feel any better, I too received my registration renewal and for my 02 Jetta wagon I'm being charged $46.50 which is almost double to your Girlfriend's Passat.....and the Passat is the model above my piddling Jetta. I can only deduce that I will have to pay more because it's a newer model or a wagon....go figure.
  19. If you're looking for efficient check out VW diesels. I have a 2013 Jetta and average 45 MPG.
  20. I am also going to be looking for a new car soon. I have had luxury cars (2 audi's) and economy cars (honda accord, honda prelude, and a mazda 3 hatchback) and I can say that once you go luxury it is difficult to go back to an economy car. That being said, the more expensive cars not only cost more off the bat but also more to fix, and are generally not worth it imo unless you don't care about spending the money. I had an Audi A6 that I sold before I bought my current car (mazda 3 hatch) and I was paying almost $4k a year to maintain the Audi, whereas after almost 5 years of owning the Mazda I have only paid for oil changes and tires. That being said, the Audi was about 5000x more fun to drive, and more comfortable, and looked prettier, etc. I was thinking of a CPO A4 as my next car, but after looking around the Jetta GLI seems to be very comparable except for the lack of awd, and it is $5k less brand new than the CPO a4.
  21. Meh, I've held them, I don't like them. Reminds me of climbing in a mid 80's Jetta, ja pehfektly engineered fur ze ahverage person, ve have examined ze ergonomics und have determined dat dis is ze most effective position fur ze driverz und zo ve have no zeat adjustments und if you don't like dis, vell you are just shtoopid!
  22. VW had alot of problems with the tdi.. i also rebuilt the top end of a friends jetta and found out the lifters were soft and had to change them all along with the cam.. VW did have updated parts to fix the problem but they did not warranty all of them, if the car did get regular oil changes it would fail in the 80-110,000 mile mark..
  23. Mitsubishi has minisplits between 15 and 21 SEER. By your advice he should ignore Mitsubishi entirely. Don't buy that Jetta TDI either, that diesel costs more. Stupid wasteful Americans. Use less energy pay less money, period. Electricity costs continue to rise and the current Precedent (it's a pun) has indicated that he needs energy to rise to make green technologies "affordable". In general you can qualify for utility rebates that will make your "upcharge" negligible by going with a more efficient unit. Don't buy that 98% efficient boiler either as it's only 98% efficient when the return water temperature is really cold - just keep buying that (barely) 80% efficient cast iron monster despite the fact that the 98% masterpiece manages to make a minimum of 87% at most operating conditions. Don't switch from oil to gas either as oil has more btu's in a gallon than gas has btu's in a therm. Nevermind that gas is 1/2 the cost of oil, that's irrelevant.
