I'm sure most people feel the same way, but why not at the very least, make no assumtions as to what may or may not happen? Drunk people make very bad decisions sometimes... I'm just pointing out that a prosecutor may not believe that simply a person in your house constitutes a threat.

I think he meant...what are you shooting at? btw, that’s an interesting outfit. Camo shorts to blend in, safety shirt to stand out?

Welcome to The Peoples Republic of New Jersey! Get the stupid FPID card using whatever forms your local PD gave you! The FPID card is also a permit to carry a rifle or shotgun, unloaded, outside the deviation transport laws. Who cares what forms you fill out if the end result is you have the FPID card in the end? You are good to go! You are definitely better off with a FPID than without!

Although some newspaper editors would agree... the phrase is as much a statement of "intent" (to do it annually) as it is an announcement. And, fyi: When the Assembly for the Teaching of English Grammar started having conferences in 1990, they called the inaugural edition "The First Annual ATEG Conference". So, they of all people should know, right? Stay the course, @67gtonut!! Stay the course. Never let Zeke - OF ALL PEOPLE - critique your writing... even jokingly! (… the mere thought of "Zeke the Editor" was clearly deserving of the rarely bestowed Quadruple Facepalm).

I don't know why you're having a hard time understanding that in the state of NJ you can't legally shoot someone for simply breaking into your house. If they're not an immediate threat to you, you can't legally use deadly force against them. Believe it or not, the police are actually quite good at their jobs. It will normally be pretty apparent whether they were a threat to you or not. There are COUNTLESS prosecutors that would gladly stand against you on an issue like this. To assume that you're going to be safe shooting anyone that happens to make it past your deterrents is incredibly ignorant.

Are you Conservative or Liberal? If a conservative doesn't like guns, he doesn't buy one. If a liberal doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed. If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn't eat meat. If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone. If a conservative is homosexual, he quietly leads his life. If a liberal is homosexual, he demands legislated respect. If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation. A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him. If a conservative doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels. Liberals demand that those they don't like be shut down. If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church. A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced. (Unless it's a foreign religion, of course!) If a conservative reads this, he'll forward it because it seems logical. A liberal will delete it because he's "offended."

There is a number of reasons you dont go to gun buybacks, first and foremost their illegal to begin with. If the guy didnt have an FPID, he was breaking the law himself. In this case, both parties were overreaching their responsibilities when he brought more firearms than he was allowed, or the cops would be willing to overlook as possibly illegally transported. If the guy requested the firearms back, who knows what he would be charged with, and if he broke any laws... so the cops may have had a legal reason to actually confiscate them. Whether we agree with the reason or not. This is no different than any other material subject. Can a cop pull you over and request proof of ownership for anything in your possession? Nothing in the law states firearms are any different.

I literally wear the same outfit on like a regular basis. My parents often get confused as my torso just floats around the house (i wear camo hats as well).

Ha Ha... that might be it. They don't mess around with us old farts... The only time we had any issues with a RO was with my son, who was wrestling with the bolt on his Mosin, and the RO stopped over to see what was going on. Otherwise, they just walk by.

My understanding is most 20ga are also lighter weight, so the felt recoil ends up being about even vs. a 12ga. A 20 may be easier for someone with problems holding up the gun, but recoil would still be about the same. A problem I have encountered with most new women shooters has been the weight of the front of the gun (specifically in my cases, rifles) when standing or otherwise unsupported, so a 20 would be easier on people with less strength in their arms, though I don't think it should be a real issue for the brief amount of time a sporting shotgun would be held up in the air. A semi-auto would likely help absorb some recoil, and I believe there are certain Benellis which have, or can have added, a recoil dampening device in the stock. A recoil pad, or even extra layer of clothing, can help tame a 12ga. And a heavier gun will almost always tame a heavy load better than a lighter gun. As for 12 vs 20, you are reducing the number of pellets heading toward your target, which can make things a little more challenging - not .410 challenging, but still, if you're anything like me, I need every single bit of help I can get... Last thought, cost of shooting should be a lot lower for 12 than 20, based on what I have seen. Maybe (since I don't own a 20ga and never look) the cost of 20 is close to 12, but the times I have seen sales, it seems like 20ga is always $1-2 more per box than 12ga...and I am a cheap bastard....

You might want to try it out before investing money. There's places and courses where you can rent shotguns and there's a bi- monthly(?) Meetup with the people from this group to shoot clays. I'm sure you can borrow or try someone's shotgun before you buy something to at least know the direction you want to head in. Hell, if I'm there you can shoot mine. Shotguns are like cars... they come in a wide variety from beat up Honda civics to pickup trucks to Maseratis. But each is better suited for certain tasks. Sure they all get from point a to point b, but you wouldn't want to haul lumber in the back of a sports car or drag race the work van. I don't think the perfect-for-all-occasions shotgun exists, but you may find one that will suit MOST of your needs first and specialize later. If you're trying to save money though, seriously try different shotguns and different sports out FIRST. You don't want to drop a couple hundred on a used shotgun that doesn't work for you in the long run just to throw more money away later after you figure out what you need it to do. Yeah, few years ago my wife was going to drive it and said the parking brake was stuck and could I take it off for her. I learned into car and hit it with my hand to disengage it. She had the car in reverse and it starts rolling down the slight hill that our driveway is almost knocking me over. I managed to jump into it and stop it from going across street and into neighbors car but not before driver door hit retaining wall and bent door wrong way., Body shop was able to bend it back and closely perfectly but there are dents in it. Been this way for a few years now. I just need to get get motivated and find matching door and swap it out. Probably should do your as well. I hit it a little to hard a few too many times getting ice off it one year after an ice storm. Still runs like a champ though. I love my Grand Prix.

Released from whom? If the mags were somehow out of jurisdiction maybe blaming the out of towners would work but if the mags stayed In town they should have been released. IDK if its the Cleo or prosecuter who had the say on go/no go about releasing either way it's confiscation. The police should have been told to return them, what law precludes them from a common courtesy, they are immune from the constrictions of the 10 rd law no? Seems to me like it was just a matter of discretion and they chose wrong.

I've heard of plenty of people reload strait walled cases without cleaning. I just don't see the point of introducing carbon soot and possibly unburnt powder into the dies. There is also the factor of lead, but if your already handling it you would take precautions. Most my casings get swept up from the floor, so I just clean as a matter of caution for my dies and final product.

and just like that, someone else who agrees getting a FPID is a good and safe idea... imagine that...

I do the same minus reloading mags. Thats actually a nono, got yelled at for it once from one of the ROs. Was by my truck if that changes anything tho.
  32. 1 point
Yeah, that's what we've experienced. 20/10. Once we reset targets, we go back and reload mags for the remainder of the CF, so it's really not that horrible. I bring a mixed bag of targets (paper, cans, and water bottles), so by the time we reset, clean up and get back to the truck, most of the CF is done. Plus, we normal go for a minimum of two hours, so we'll get enough actual shooting time in.

I figured smaller gauge would have less pellets and would therefore make it harder. Makes sense i guess. I never realized how massive of a variety of 12 gauges there are. This is like my Intro to AR's all over again. FML lol. Much to learn.... if anyone sees a good deal please send it my way!

@Drew_S They will provide a shotgun if you do not have one. I would expect these to be 12ga, maybe 20ga or even possibly a .410, but 12ga is certain. If you are bringing your own, I'd bring a field style 12ga or 20ga if possible. I dunno how they'd feel about an 18" home defense shotgun or shockwave... They provide ammo, so if you have a strange caliber shotgun, you might have an issue. Not sure that they want you bringing ammo, but if it is your only gun and don't want to use theirs, might not hurt to bring 5 or 10 rounds of 7.5 / 8 / 9 birdshot and keep it separate in your car, and ask one of the instructors before bringing the ammo (and gun) out. You don't have to shoot a rifle. All firearms are covered under shotguns these days. You'll be observed for safe handling and being aware of headstamp and use of safety. Hitting targets is honestly not important, though if you can't hit those ground targets, I'd hope you work on that before going out in the field.

PST isn't necessarily "better" as that's a completely relative term. It's more expensive because it's a first focal plane scope. The glass is the same from all I hear. I believe the knobs and adjustments are as well. This is all dependent on me remembering correctly. Don't count on it. I just purchased a Leupold VX5HD 3-15. I would recommend it to anyone. It's pretty awesome. It's a bit out of budget tho. Feel free to PM me any questions as well.

The 320 may be big enough for your hands but obviously is overshadowed by the size of your head. I’m willing to go shooting. I have demands: you shoot first, you can’t be at the same range as me, The event will be on the third Thursday after a leap day, and I can only travel by sled dog.

Guns won't be confiscated because you can't prove they are legally yours. Come on. Even in NJ. Unless they come up as stolen on an NCIC check, or absent of a third party complaint, you go on your merry way, WITH your firearms.

When I reloaded 357 lead swc for my revolver, I did not separately clean the brass. Used it as is from the resizing die. Thousands of rounds never a problem. All on a lee single stage press. Maybe they stayed clean as the brass never touched the ground? Bucket to cylinder to bucket.
  43. 1 point
I believe the whole purpose of cleaning brass is to not damage or introduce grit into the dies. It would not make sense to me to size prior to cleaning the brass. I use standard dry tumble with corncob or walnut media.
  44. 1 point
What bullets are you using? -- if it's lead HBWC you'll need to be fairly heavy with the expansion die

I belong to both... I’ve been a member of SJSC for 6 years, I joined Quinton just last year. I’m 19 miles from SJSC, and 35 miles from Quinton. Hands down, if I had to give up one right now, it would be SJSC, so much more going on at Quinton. I shoot at least 2 of the competitive sports per month at Quinton. Members get a $5 discount at each event, so just the discounts pay for my membership (after the initiation fee). SJSC is good for me to get out for a quick 100 - 200 rounds of target practice. There seems to be more restrictions at SJSC (no holster draws being the big one). Also, not much you can do with a shotgun at SJSC (5 stand, trap, skeet, and sporting clays at Quinton). Tough call, I guess it depends on how much and what kind of experience you are looking for. Suggest you look at Quintons calendar and come down for one of the events to check it out - membership is not required for most of the events. I have friends and family members that are happy with USANA, and Mullica Hill Rifle and Pistol Club. I also hear of folks happy with Telco.
