List of NJ Businesses posting 'No Guns' signs

Recommended Posts

Keyport Coffee Cafe in Keyport has a "lawfully concealed firearms WELCOME" sign next to the front door. So, next time you need a double half-caf triple soy latte, head on in. Their regular brew is actually quite good.

sounds like that malls signage doesn't pass muster......

While I agree in principle, it doesn't seem like there's an actual legal standard or definition of what constitutes appropriate signage, and perhaps that's intentional in order to trip people up. Other states seem to have much better (reasonable? logical?) mechanisms in place for this.

That's funny, expecting the Clowns of Trenton to do anything with common sense, like other states...

thing is.......how is anyone going into that mall supposed to know if it's not posted on every single possible entrance? while no one wants to be the test case........even here that'd get tossed right outta court if you went in, looked for signage, saw none so thought you were ok.

East entrance (opposite Route 1) has the sign.  I can't comment on the other entrances as that's the one that I use on the rare occasion that I need to go there.

How big is the sign?

I think it will be useful to maintain a list of business that are posting some variation of a ‘No Guns’ sign in NJ.   I'd like to crowdsource the data.  If forum members can list, in this thread, the County, Town, and Business Name, plus any notes you think relevant, I will periodically pull the information out of the thread, and add it to this top post.   It should give carry permit holders on this forum one post to check to see where private businesses have added restrictions.  I'm not capturing here the broader restrictions that are part of NJ law...schools, courthouses, etc.

This is NEITHER A COMPREHENSIVE NOR A CURRENT LIST of NJ businesses that have posted any variation of a “No Guns’ sign.  Data is reported by NJGunForums members and updated to this post as time allows.   Each carry permit holder remains responsible for looking for ‘no guns’ signage whenever entering a business.

Format:    County, Town, Business Name,  Relevant Notes,  Date Posted to the forum

Note Regarding Movie Theaters:   Regal, AMC, and Cinemark all operate cinemas in NJ, and all are reported by multiple sources to have 'no gun' policies.  From what I can tell, only Regal mentions it on their website, buried in the 'Regal Admittance Policy/Costumes with Masks and Props' section, where both prop and real firearms are prohibited.   Look closely for 'no guns' signs when attending the theater, and let me know if such signs are sighted in the wild.

Note regarding Costco:   I’ve not seen a ‘no guns’ sign at any Costco I’ve visited, but the corporate website prohibits carry at all Costco locations.  https://customerservice.costco.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/709/~/are-guns-%26-personal-firearms-allowed-in-costco-warehouses%3F

Six months into 2023, that is a singularly unimpressive list :-) I suggest that another step that we could take is to write letters to the management of each of those places, informing them of which one of their competitors is getting our business because of their assinine policy.  Won't work with the casino association, but we can at least rub the others' noses in the revenue they are losing.

For Ranges, it's an insurance liability thing.  Some ranges allow you to holster draw if you prove proficiency...

And if allowing carry becomes an insurance liability issue for retail businesses (as well it may) does that make it acceptable? Double standards pretty thoroughly undermine moral authority.

I need to do more research on the holster draw thing. Range 129 is said to allow holster draw if you have passed their holster draw course (proficiency). But that doesn't necessarily conflict with their published requirement for all firearms to be unloaded and in locked cases when entering the establishment. It would be pretty silly to make someone do that when they are going to be drawing and firing after entering, but unfortunately "silly" <> "impossible".

You have to look at it from a business standpoint - Take Gun for Hire for example - they get thousands of people from NYC and other areas who aren't trained, don't know how to shoot, etc.  Do you want them drawing from a holster?  No.  There's enough problems there already that they shouldn't have to worry about it.

Its' the same way with several private ranges too - I know mine doesn't allow for holster draw unless you're LEO.  Does it suck?  Yes.  Is there a purpose?  Money.  It's a privately owned club and the insurance rates would skyrocket if they allowed holster draw.  We have enough issues as it is with members (both new and old) popping off rounds into the ceiling or floor or walls.

It's a business thing - if you don't like it, find another business to frequent, or abide by it.

Spotts Hardware, Medford, Burlington County.  There are small signs at each entrance.  I asked an employee how long the sign has been there.  He believes it was posted 8 months ago.

I shopped there a couple times years ago....Never again!

the large stores would rather have the folks that rob them on a daily basis...store theft, shop lifting and hold-ups.....don't shop there anyway....omo

Walmart is a pretty big store. I do a consolidated shopping trip for non-persishible food and supplies once a month, and I've carried there the last few times I've gone.

FWIW, I spoke with USLS today about the situation that exists at a local mall, where an anchor has no signage at their entrance nor at the transition into the mall proper. (Side note I noticed that same thing at Bridgewater mall last week when going through Bloomingdales.) The basic answer was "if you didn't know that carry was prohibited and someone finds out then you can be asked to leave. If you don't leave you can then be charged with trespass." I'd assume that also includes if they catch you a second time.

The thing I forgot to ask, is will USLS cover you for a self-defense claim if you genuinely didn't know you weren't allowed to carry somewhere but did. The safe bet would be no I suppose.

You have to remember, the COTUS there to.protect you from the government. Not from other people.  Whilst I don't like no gun signs, I respect the decision, whether it be corporate or private to not allow carry.

There are some people on this forum I wouldn't allow to carry in my house.  FWiW,  if I met you you're not one of them!!!

Agreed. I also 100% support the right and respect the decision of those who disagree with those restrictions to refuse to patronize any business or associate with any person that would arbitrarily suspend their right to self defense while on premises. Fundamental liberty is at work in both instances. I do have a problem with carry prohibitions by those corporatist entities that enjoy a government created and enforced monopoly on essential goods and services, but the main objection there is to corporatism writ large, not the specific policy.

What's the purpose of posting here when you're purging your account?

if other walmarts are like the one i go to, they only have signage asking us to "please refrain from openly carrying a firearm". i have been armed with 1 spare mag every week when i go shopping there since i got my ccw

i've met a few members......and i can honestly say that i'd not have any issues with them carrying in my home. a couple of them, if i were in desperate need of help with mom.....as in they could get there faster than me or the ambulance, i would trust them to go there too.

I had decided to purge my account after what I viewed as an unwarranted, heavy handed, whack at a post I made by one moderator. I'm no longer certain whether or not I want to bail. I began monitoring posts here after a month or so, and then yielded to the temptation to chime in. My return to you is, YTF do you care? If you have a specific problem with something I've posted, feel free to take issue with that (you never seemed to have a problem doing that in the past).

On further consideration, I think that I might not want an adult in my home at all if I was not comfortable with that person carrying there.

that has been my point in an extended way about carry overall.......if i can trust you to walk amongst myself and those i love, then i can trust you with a firearm. if i can't trust you with a firearm, then i need to know why you're not still in prison. not you personally....."you" in a general sense, because all of these sudden news reports we're seeing of stupidity, roadraging with firearms(just saw one on nextdoor dot com right in pine hill) and "mass" shootings are not people we'd trust to walk among us.
