Has anyone ever had that asked before you were allowed to handle a firearm? I went to sportsman's Rendezvous in Flemington today and they would not let me handle a 1911 since I did not have my permit with me. When I asked why this was the case, the counter person said, "cause I don't know you". I offered my FID and license to verify my identity and he responded sharply with "no permit, I'm not showing the weapon". I promptly thanked him for his time and then went to the ammo counter. Once there I asked for one package of .22LR mini mags and 2 boxes of the American Eagle 9mm. They rang up at just under 61 bucks with tax!?!? When I asked for the prices I was told 23 for the 9mm and 10.99 for the .22! I again said thank you, but declined to finished the transaction citing their prices were very high compared to just last week when I bought 2 other boxes of 9mm at 12.99. Overall it was a crappy experience and cemented that I will not be going back there. Anyone else have this happen?you you

I went there a couple years ago. Same thing with needing to show a p2p to look at a pistol. FID and Dl did no good. Never went back.

Some stores require an FID to handle firearms, some don't. It's up to the store.

Actually I believe it is BATF that says you have to show FID/DL to handle the firearms, store has no say in the matter. Can any of our FFLs confirm or deny this?

I know their p2p policy for handling firearm is for the birds... but I have not had any other negative experiences with them

 

I just picked up a Springfield EMP 9mm 1911 yesterday from them NICS took 2 days and they called me promptly when it came back. There ammo can be slightly high priced but given the times we are in. They have 22lr CCI bricks for 29.99 I'm sure you cant find it anywhere else any lower at the moment.

Believe that is correct. I know they ask me at Otto's and they know me there. I don't have a prob with it. But you may not be tantalizing someone for a sale without letting people fondle a gun or two.... Screw'em...

The store/employee is/was stupid, what if you like a gun based on them letting you handle it and would go for a permit and purchase the same gun from said store?

I've been asked for my FID when asking to been shown a weapon at more than one store. It doesn't bother me in the least.

I believe as per NJ state law you are not permitted to handle a firearm in a shop without presenting a NJ FPIC. I'm sure he was asking for the permit since you couldn't actually purchase a handgun without it. It's a crappy thing to do and in my opinion is just poor customer service.

You mean to tell me I can fondle handguns without one? Stores I've been to that enforced this policy.. Heritage in Rahway, bullet hole, meltzers, and Rays sport shop (when it was open obviously).

 

I've never been able to touch a handgun without a PP. maybe I shop at the wrong places. Before joining this forum, I was very unaware of the vast amount of vendors we have here in NJ

When I went to Heritage, they wanted to see my FID but didn't care about the P2P. Maybe it depends on which employee is talking to you?

Same! I had a hell of a time finding places and assumed it was because our bullcrap gun laws made it too much of a hassle. Was pleasantly surprised to discover how many there actually are!

Or maybe they don't like you. Haven't been to all those places, but Rays was fine....Meltzers no prob... Otto, no prob. Ramsey OD, no prob.. Mastodon, no prob. Just FIDs..

I dont go in this shop at all, maybe once a year for some cleaning supplies if i m really out and some ammo if i m really out but not more than a box or 2.

 

The reason is the attitude of this old guy with the glasses who thinks i ll rob him the next moment if i simply ask him a question.

I know about their rules and i find them a complete turnoff.

 

While i show my FID at most places and i did have a permit with me when he asked for it i decided right there and then that he wasnt goign to get any of my money ....never. And i live a few miles away from the joint.

 

He can go and sell to his friends all day for all i care but he wont get any money from me.

Never have I been asked to show my fid to handle a firearm at any store. And never ever ever asked to see a p2p to handle a handgun. I went to the store the OP stated and looked at the guns through glass and never asked to see anything cuz nothing caught my eye. But prices seemed high and ammo prices as stated above were high Buy had ammo alot of places don't have. Such as the 22 mini mags are hard to find. Fleminyon is weird anyway lol.

I have no problem presenting my FID and DL to fondle a firearm, but needing to show my permit?, Really? as for the Ammo, I was there and it was on the shelf and from previous posts about it being priced fairly I asked for some. Never again will I shop there.

Years ago when i would go to zueses, they use to ask for a fid or drivers license and hold it until you were done. I ended up working with a former employee of theirs and he said they would hold too keep someone from a grab and run..

I was told the first time at the range (before they knew me) that they would take a pistol out and show me, but I had to present an FID to handle it. I thought it strange as they will rent me a gun without an FID. Now that they know me they have not had me show a card each time.
