jackandjill 683 Posted October 25, 2016 Lot of DDOS attacks going around and good portion of that was pointed towards DNS infrastructure in general, over past couple of days. Could be one of those.
45Doll 5,881 Posted October 25, 2016 I don't know what the cause was, but the issue was definitely DNS resolution. Couldn't get an IP for the site.

voyager9 3,437 Posted October 26, 2016 Interest about that hack, denial of service nerd. They had smert thermostats and stuff involved. I've heard all this connected appliances will soon be the new back door I've only a layman' perspective but... The Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) targeted one of the major Domain Name Service (DNS) providers. This service converts host names like www.google.com to IP addresses like 123.123.123.123 which is what the network gear needs to route data. The attack itself was not complex: send a specific DNS query fast enough and it overloads the system. what made this attack unique was the volume. DNS is old...like one of the cornerstones of the Internet. As such it is distributed and designed to handle a hexadecimal shit ton of queries. My understanding is that This attack used a query that is small but hard to distribute. This allows the attack to pinpoint a specific area. The attack also used a huge number of nodes. Usually these are PCs that have been infected with malware. This time it was devices attached to ur internet. The arrival I read mentioned DVRs and WebCams but it's possible that other things were involved. I read that devices with a particular chip from China were targeted for use. This chip had a hard coded user/password. The nature of the attack was such that devices only needed to be accessed and not necessarily infected to be rolled into the Botnet. Owners would not know they're devices were involved. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
