So what are your guys other hobbies or activitys..........

Recommended Posts

I have way too many hobbies, but boating is the big one. We spend 30 weekends a year on the water plus a full week or two. This takes up a lot of free time so Autocross/DE (PCA) and homebrewing are currently on the back burner. Espresso/coffee/home roasting are nice for when I'm home (winter and weekdays) and I am a bit of a fountain pen and watch geek.

I need a hobby that makes money instead of costing money.

Guns were my second expensive hobby. Skiing was the first. But there are literally 100s you can do on a shoestring.

With this in mind, nine months after earning my General Class amateur radio licence I'm still on the fence about investing in serious equipment. The money is not a significant issue but I'd be embarrassed to spend $2-3k and then be disappointed, to have the crap sitting around collecting dust.

The real cost of hobbies is TIME. I've played about 700 rated games of chess, which is a relatively cheap hobby based on cost and equipment. I use the same board, plastic pieces, and clock that I bought 20 years ago.

700 games x (4 hours + .75 travel hours) = 3325 hours. Divide that by 40 hours, a normal work week, and you get 83 f-ing weeks.

Multiply that by whatever annual income you like:

$40,000 per year = $64,000

$60,000 per year = $96,000

$100,000 per year = $160,000

You get the picture. So chess was a lot more expensive for me than the $50 equipment bag, the $30-40 per year I spend in books, the $12 entry fees -- geez even the $100 entries.

On the other hand you can work work work and die rich.

Oenophile.

(Now I know you guys are wondering if that was something different that got auto corrected. Ha. )

Is it porn?

Porn in a glass.

I'd left that off my list. I realized long ago that my collection exceeds what I could ever utilize appropriately. No more purchases until I don't have to worry about keeping them "too long." I did get a kick out of the way you phrased it, especially since I'd decided against using the word "horology" on my previous post.

I love the term horology. The study of time. I'm a bit of a watch guy myself.

Aside from that: skiing, hiking, gadgets (I like electronic things) to name a few.

I thought it was porn.

Gee willikers, maybe we could find a forum member close to all of us who would host a pajama party sleepover, where we can stay up

all night and talk about our feelings and our hobbies while we eat s'mores and drink hot cocoa!

I dunno....not all of us are into this "Glock" thing

If you were to wake up with a condom hanging out of your ass, would you tell anybody or keep it to yourself?

    • We never let then inside.  Last re-evaluation was 6-7 years ago, wife politely told him that he was welcome to look around the property and he could look in the windows. He saw two white resin chairs in the basement and told her that this constituted a finished basement. And everything in the basement is bare concrete/ cinder block, and mechanical systems. Nothing finished about it. Ultimately he relented and I'm sure that was a ploy to coerce us to allow him in
    • I use an Alien Gear cloak tuck (IWB) with my Shield.  Neoprene back - in the summer it does feel warm but doesn't rub or chafe.   https://aliengearholsters.com/ruger-lcp-iwb-holster.html Could also go with the shapeshift as it has multiple options - OWB/IWB, Appendix... https://aliengearholsters.com/ruger-lcp-shapeshift-modular-holster-system.html
    • The  12-1 compression ratio L88 is long gone. This is GM's updated version. it might be  pump gas 10-1 engine The L88 was a aluminum head  cast iron block engine with a nasty solid lifter cam. the  ZL1 was a all aluminum  12 or 13-1 compression ratio engine with the best forged internal parts at the time and had a even nastier solid lifter cam
    • I like my regular carry holster.  OWB leather with belt slots.  I've been carrying for over a year and it was comfortable and I hardly even noticed it.  I carry (usually) a Ruger LCP .380 - light, convenient, tiny. But...today I ended up taking it off an leaving it home after a few hours. I cut down a big maple tree a few days ago and I spent 3/4 of today loading and unloading firewood into the back of my truck and a trailer.  It was a warm day, I was dirty, tired, sweaty, and my holster was rubbing against my side.  The leather and exposed metal snap was no longer comfortable. I'm thinking about adding a layer of something to that part of the holster to soften the contact.  Anything insulating will make it worse.  I don't want a sweaty, hotter holster against my skin.  I'm imagining something thin, breathable, that won't absorb sweat, and softer than leather, metal snaps, and rivets.   But I have no idea what would work. I'm hoping somebody else has already figured this out and I can just do what they did. Any suggestions appreciated.
    • Check the primers on the ammo you didn't shoot yet. Are they fully seated? If the primer is not just below flush with the back of the case, the first hit can seat it better then the second hit ignites it.
